2010: Trends to Toss, Trends to Keep by Alana Finnie
|
The Applaud Women publication is dedicated to women in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. It's purpose is to inspire, inform, and
applaud local women. The core of the magazine is our inspirational women's articles, most of which feature local women but occasionally we are
able to interview national women who we feel provide a unique inspiration for our readers. Our other articles cover topics of interest such as food
recipes, home, garden, beauty, health, fashion, dating, parenting, seniors, finance, business, hair care, skin care, advice, real estate, insurance,
weddings etc. Each issue has a feature section as well. Many of our articles are written by local business people who provide information
relevant to their business expertise. The Applaud Women website is also a resource center for local women including the most comprehensive
listings of Restaurants, Weddings, Female doctors and Hotels. It also includes a number of informational pages with links, articles and RSS feeds
to both local and national websites of interest to women in NH & n. MA. To read the publication click here then click on the cover image to turn
pages, print or download the entire magazine. For past issues visit the Applaud Women Library.

It's easy to get sucked into the world of trendiness regardless of whether or not the looks are actually flattering.
Hey, if celebs are wearing it, it has to be fab — right? Wrong! Let's make 2010 the most stylish year ever by ridding
ourselves of ugly trends and embracing those that are pretty.
What to lose:
Harem Pants
These are the least flattering pants I have ever set my eyes on. Ultimately, they make every woman (even stick-thin
models) look like they've got huge hips and a ridiculously low crotch. Pair this look with a shiny metallic fabric, and
you're looking at a fashion faux pas that simply looks like a joke. For these pants, it may be best to take MC
Hammer’s advice — you can’t and shouldn’t touch them.
Thigh-high boots
I'm all for boots with eye-catching detail. But thigh-high boots aren't helping anyone. Most of them look like they
might be part of a dominatrix costume. Rather than lengthening legs, they actually make gams look stumpy. Not a
look I'd particularly encourage.
Sack dresses
For some reason, the sack dress has been seen all over the place. Much like an actual sack, the cut does nothing
for a woman's body. You end up looking like Humpty Dumpty. And really, who wants that?!
Shoulder pads
Looking like a linebacker is not something we should strive for. Shoulder pads weren't flattering in the '80s, and
they're certainly not flattering now. As a side note, my grandmother has a closet full of shoulder-padded blazers.
Much as I love her, that should be proof enough that the trend is a no-go.
Open-toe booties
Why, why, why would anyone wear boots with a peep-toe? When I wear boots, it is because my feet are cold. If they
are not cold, I opt for sandals or open-toed pumps, perhaps. But there is just no point to a pair of gorgeous boots
that don't even keep your tootsies warm! Not only do open-toe booties undermine the purpose of a boot, they just
look silly.
What to keep:
High-waisted dresses
2009 marked the return high-waisted, feminine dresses. The cut of these dresses make us look slimmer because
they actually nip in at the natural waist (the tiniest part on most women). The result is looking quite chic while
appearing to have lost about 5 pounds. After stuffing my face over the holidays, that's definitely something that'll
come in handy.
Big scarves
The easiest way to change up an outfit is with a pretty scarf. Even the simplest of outfits can look dazzling when
paired with a brightly-colored doodad draped around your neck. Scarves are the ultimate multi-purpose accessory.
They aren’t just a winter necessity but a fun year-round fashion statement.
Metallic fabric
A little shimmer does a body good. Often times, a metallic fabric can come off looking like a neutral so it can be
worn with virtually any color. Personally, I'm a fan of metallic cocktail dresses, especially for evenings out. Not ready
for full-body metallic? Start with a shirt that peeks out just below your jacket or a pretty pair of pumps.
Plaid flannel
Brought back from the days of grunge, plaid tops are now cut delicately enough to appear feminine and fabulous.
Country inspired checks look great on a top, or even a scarf if you're so inclined. It's easy to go overboard with this
trend, though. The key is to keep colors traditional and subdued.
There you have it. Let's make our New Year’s resolution to dress fabulously, sans any fashion disasters.
