Back to the Drawing Board: The Weight Loss Battle
By Emily Pietro
Many women constantly struggle with maintaining a healthy weight. For some, it’s simply a matter of dieting and exercising, but for others, there are
underlying conditions that are difficult to overcome without the help of a professional. That’s where Physicians Healthy Weight Center (PHWC)
comes in.

As many of our readers may recall, Susan has been working with Dr. Jennifer Warren of PHWC for some time in an effort to slim down. Susan
began at 153.3 pounds, and she followed the program for a year and a half and found herself plateauing at 136.5 pounds, thus giving her the
impression that there was no use in continuing. Susan stopped using PHWC as a tool in her weight management and also stopped using appetite
suppressants. Six months later, life became stressful and that is when things started to go downhill. “I spiral with stress,” says Susan. “The more
you eat what you’re not supposed to eat, the more you want it. I had lost between twenty and thirty pounds, and then I found that I had gained forty
– I’m worse off now than I was before.”

At her first consultation in November 2006 at PHWC, Susan’s height, weight, age and BMI (Body Mass Index), which is a ratio of weight to height,
were recorded. Susan also used a device called the Body Fat Analyzer, which is able to automatically distinguish which portion of the client’s body
is muscle weight and which portion is fat weight. This machine is especially important during the course of the weight loss:  some clients will
become discouraged and stop dieting because they do not see a difference in their weight. However, what they do not realize is that they are
losing fat weight and gaining muscle weight, which is an important (and much healthier) type of weight to gain. Muscle weighs more than fat, which
can create the disillusion of gaining bad weight, when it is actually healthy.

Susan has gone back to working with Dr. Warren, who is a graduate of Tufts University and has advanced training in the study of medical weight
management (Bariatrics). Dr. Warren has struggled with weight issues herself, and after looking at the basic elements of maintaining a healthy
weight, such as nutritional and caloric needs, she is now slim and fit and shares her successful program with others at PHWC.

Beth Alstrom, the nutritionist at PHWC, showed Susan how to count calories and keep track of what she consumes daily. Beth also has Susan eat
three meals and three snacks each day, and has her eat every three to four hours. This helps sustain a healthy and functioning metabolism, since
skipping meals causes the body to store fat and creates greater feelings of hunger later in the day. “I need someone to check up on me, and the
staff here at PHWC do that. It keeps me on the right path to weight loss. They educate me about nutrition and help me stick to a set menu every
day, which makes staying on track much easier for me.”

Susan also uses an appetite suppressant, Diethylproprion ER, to help manage her hunger. Appetite suppressants function in the part of the brain
that sends signals for cravings, helping to curb addictive eating behaviors. As well as following a diet plan, Susan also must incorporate exercise
into her daily routine.

“I really lack what I call the ‘self-control gene,’ so that’s why I need the appetite suppressant as well as the help that I receive from Dr. Warren,”
Susan explains. “Some people are able to find out nutritional information and be totally set from there. I’m not one of those people, I need that
extra control.”

“Another thing that I love about the program is that they are willing to change the plan to work with your body,” Susan explains. “Since I suffer from
IBS, I have a lot of problems when certain things don’t agree with my body. I had been eating Quorn, which is like a chicken substitute, and this just
wasn’t working for me. If I had been at Weight Watchers, they wouldn’t have been able to identify the problem and adjust. The doctors here, on the
other hand, can do this. They have the knowledge and skills necessary, and this is a great advantage to clients.” This knowledge contributed to
the discovery of an obstacle in the way of Susan’s weight loss:  she is Vitamin D deficient. For more information on the effects of Vitamin D
deficiency, see Dr. Warren’s article.

“I’m really excited that after five weeks back in the program, I have lost over four pounds. It would be nice if it was ten, but a pound a week is
considered to be healthy. I’m heading back into the right direction and I am in the process of positive change!”

The Physicians Healthy Weight Center is a great option for anyone struggling to lose weight. Dr. Warren can prescribe tests and analyze blood
work to rule out any underlying medical conditions which may be hindering weight loss. The lifestyle changes prescribed are healthy and practical,
with great results. The Physicians Healthy Weight Center is located at 1 Merrill Dr. Suite 1 in Hampton, NH. They also see patients in Bedford and
Dover, NH. Call (603) 758-1400 for an appointment. For more information, visit them on-line at
