In the Present Moment
by Susan Miccile
The alarm of a new day blares. You take one step and hit the ground running. Your day begins. With each breath that we take, each moment passes. With each
blink of our eyes, each moment is gone. The seconds, minutes, and hours go by. We never caught our breath. It is night. Your head, cradled in the pillow, is
pounding out the drama of the day. The mind is crazed with a string of thoughts. The connection to our heart is buried, the breath is shallow.

Our racing, mindless thoughts invade our minds, clouding our awareness to the beauty of the moment that we are in. The baggage of our past and the fear and
anxiety of the anticipation of the future drag our bodies down a spiral staircase to the never ending bottom. We are either in the future or stuck in the past. The
human nature of judgments, assumptions and interpretations that clouds our vision paralyzes our ability to be in the moment. What we miss in each moment can
only be found by being present in the next moment. What does being present in the moment feel like?

The potential for present moment connections rests within each one of our hearts. The opportunity for awakening your heart to the beauty of the present moment
is only a breath away. Your breath is constant. Your breath is with you in each moment. The breath is in unique rhythm with your heart, when you welcome the
silence in.

Present Moment Breaths:

Take a moment. Settle your body. You may sit or stand. You may choose to close your eyes, or prefer to keep them open. Begin to breathe in, a slow deep breath
in through your nose. Allow the air to fill your chest. Slowly exhale through your mouth. Spend a few minutes just breathing. You will begin to notice the streaming
thoughts that invade your mind as you breathe in the quiet. Constant chatter will hum in your mind. Just notice your wandering thoughts and allow them to swirl in
and out of your mind. Notice, without judgment, your thoughts as they drift through. Just notice… What are you feeling within your body? The quieter your inner body
becomes, the nosier your mind will sound at first. Be patient. Be compassionate with yourself as you gently guide your mind back to your breath. As you focus on
your breath, your whole body quietly catches a glimpse of the present moment.

Being present is actually stepping outside of your mind… you expand your awareness to be the observer of your thoughts as Eckhart Tolle mentions in his book
The Power of Now. Just “be” in the moment. Embody the stillness that rests within each breath. The gentle release of each breath opens gaps in our thoughts. It
is within each gap in your thoughts that the connection to your heart opens. The silence of Now grounds our bodies in peace. The wonder of joy lifts our hearts
when the knowing of the ever present mind is silenced.

What would it feel like to rest your head at night, your breath gently flowing through your body, a calm peace is settling in? What would it mean to you to realize that
even through the blur of life on autopilot, you took a second to breathe in your moment?

As the alarm of the new day springs you into the next moment, take a slow, deep breath. Awaken to your present moment.
