Soufflés (14 Market Square) is a nifty little shop that offers kitchen essentials
and, by some people’s account, the best coffee in town (Downeast coffee, from
Maine).  The owner stocks the shop with unique items, as much locally-made
product as possible and hand-made do-dads. “I try to keep on top window displays
are also very eye-catching. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and 10 a.
m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.

Ready for breakfast or a light lunch? Fowle’s (17 State St.) is one of the most
enduring features of the downtown. With old-style counter and booth seating, and
an adjacent newsstand featuring a large selection of newspapers and magazines,
Fowle’s has always been a popular meeting place in the city. On offer: coffee and
espresso drinks, soft drinks, hot or cold sandwiches, full breakfasts and pastries

Imagine getting enough scent to last you a year for just $18! Venture further up
State Street to
The Fragrance Bar, Inc. (35 State St.), which offers stock or
custom-blended Nantucket natural oils starting at $18 for a one-note oil  -- or
create your own personal blend. The shop also features bath and body
accessories and bath products that can be infused with your own scent. Open

Even further up State Street is Kaya (41 State St.), a purveyor of fine silver, gold,
platinum and lapidary jewelry. Master jeweler and manager Kerim Kaya and his
nephew Erdim can and will customize a designs to suit any need, the most popular
being engagement and wedding rings. They use diamonds, of course, in their
designs but also offer a lot of unique and rate gemstones. “A lot of items are
specially made for the shop,” Kerim notes. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6
p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Around the corner from The Studio and a short walk down Pleasant Street is
Grand Trunk (at #53), an Old World market and vendor of fine cheeses,  pâté,
wines, beers  and everything that goes with them to make a delectable snack or
meal. The combination of smells, the low lighting, the planked floors and the finely
crafted displays all are a treat for the senses. Closed Mondays.

Ballotin Chocolates (16 Unicorn St.) is worth the side trip off Pleasant Street.
The boutique and café offers a “carefully edited” selection of the world’s finest
chocolate. Truffles, bonbons, hot chocolate, and bars and bark are literally eye
candy for the chocolate lover. The bonbons are so beautifully crafted and so
delicious it’s almost a crime to eat them at all.  Also known for its great coffee.

The Elephant’s Trunk (28 Inn St.) has been in business for 35 years. Claudia
Harris, president of the shop, describes the women’s fashions on offer as
“everyday divine.” The stock runs the gamut from very casual to dressy – but not
too dressy, if you get the drift – and accessories to complement the custom
“wearable art” designs. The jewelry fits in the same mold. Open daily to 6 p.m.

And now presenting The Grog restaurant (13 Middle St.)! Another long-standing
Newburyport business, the pub has been delighting the palates of Newburyport for
36 years -- but there has been a restaurant operating in the building since 1855.
Three floors of fresh food, refreshment and entertainment have always been the

Further east, still in town but not along the main byways, is The Tannery (50
Water St.
), a small but burgeoning shopping mall created from old mill buildings.

A lifestyle store – that’s the best description of Wish Basket, located in Mill
building #1.  “We get a lot of people from Boston who come here not necessarily
as tourists,” says owner Kerry Vaughan. She’s got furniture, fine linens, bath and
body and even specialty foods in her 3,400 square foot space. It’s an eclectic mix
of product and a local favorite that’s been in the city for 21 years. Call for hours,

Across the hall from there is the
Jabberwocky Book Shop and Eureka!, a toy
store. Owner Nancy Streeter plays the toys off children’s books that relate to the
toys. Her sister, Susan Little, owns the adjoining book store. “I took her books and
surrounded them with toys,” Nancy says. It’s a unique combination of educational
toys and books in the same display that has sparked the imagination of many a
child. Hours are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and
12 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

PARKING:Newburyport has several Free Municipal Parking lots with a 3 hour limit. The largest Municipal
lot is on the corner of Green and Merrimac Streets. There is also a lot on State Street next to
the Library and on Hale Court off Pleasant Street. There is also on-street parking with a 2-hour
limit.

The Newburyport Redevelopment Authority runs 2 waterfront parking lots on the east and west
sides of Waterfront Park. You can access them by Merrimac Street or Water Street. These lots
are generally free and all-day parking. There is a fee charged Friday-Sunday in the Summer.
