The Applaud Women publication is dedicated to women in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. It's purpose is to inspire, inform, and
applaud local women. The core of the magazine is our inspirational women's articles, most of which feature local women but occasionally we are
able to interview national women who we feel provide a unique inspiration for our readers. Our other articles cover topics of interest such as food
recipes, home, garden, beauty, health, fashion, dating, parenting, seniors, finance, business, hair care, skin care, advice, real estate, insurance,
weddings etc. Each issue has a feature section as well. Many of our articles are written by local business people who provide information
relevant to their business expertise. The Applaud Women website is also a resource center for local women including the most comprehensive
listings of Restaurants, Weddings, Female doctors and Hotels. It also includes a number of informational pages with links, articles and RSS feeds
to both local and national websites of interest to women in NH & n. MA.

Dr. Bridget Seymour
By Emily Pietro
“No symptom is too miniscule and no topic is too gross for me.” That’s Dr. Bridget Seymour’s philosophy, which fits her field perfectly – she’s a
gastroenterologist.Originally from Long Island, NY, Dr. Seymour now resides in Newburyport, MA and works at Merrimack Valley Hospital in
Haverhill.

Dr. Seymour decided that she wanted to be a doctor while working at a local hospital during high school. She decided to apply to Siena College,
located just outside of Albany, NY, because they offered a program in which acceptance to medical school in the local area after graduation was
guaranteed. “It was a no-brainer to apply, I knew what I wanted to do,” says Seymour.

Her interest in medicine was initially sparked by her grandfather, a practitioner who practiced out of his home. Although she wasn’t old enough to
know him while he was in practice, she enjoyed hearing his stories.

Gastroenterology is an uncommon field to be interested in, particularly for women. Dr. Seymour chose this field because of her experiences in
medical school. “I really enjoyed surgery, and I considered it because I liked working with my hands and with the whole procedural aspect, but I
was put off by the intensity and quality of life issues that go along with surgery. I also didn’t feel like there was enough patient contact. So instead,
I decided to focus on a specialty with procedural aspects that didn’t include those areas of surgery that I wasn’t comfortable with and provided
enough patient contact. I found myself really liking gastroenterology. I wasn’t uncomfortable at all, and I like to think that I have the right
personality to go along with talking about the issues at hand.”

She says the most challenging aspect of her career is in the daily interactions with patients, particularly when it’s difficult to make a diagnosis.
However, this also makes her career extremely rewarding. “I just want to make sure that I’m always doing a good job. There’s the daily grind of
paperwork and dealing with insurance companies, but when a patient says to me, ‘Oh, I was so afraid but you made it so easy,’ or when they send
thank-you notes, it puts me at ease. You know you’re doing a good job when your coworkers are so confident in your abilities that they send their
own mothers to you. It’s reactions like that that make everything worthwhile for me.”
