By mid-month the sweet corn is as high as the proverbial
elephant, and the roadside stands and agricultural fairs are
bursting with local fruits, vegetables and flowers.  Visitors
always enjoy picking up some sweet treats at an ice cream
stand along the way, and tossing heirloom tomatoes into their
picnic baskets en route to one of our dozens of state parks –
which are ideal places for a summer picnic.

Throughout New Hampshire, family farms have been a
cornerstone of life for centuries.  They’re still here with beautiful
vistas and landscapes; and many of them offer opportunities to
bring visitors closer to the origins of their food. The idea is to
eat local, stay healthy, travel lightly.

Close to the Seacoast, visitors can “pick” from farms and farm
stands that are local favorites.  In Barrington, Warren Farm
(www.warrenfarmnh.com) is now open for business and, while
strawberry picking is waning, raspberry picking is just ramping
up.  Heather Warren says Reveille and Killarney are the early
raspberry varieties they have ready; however, raspberry
availability will increase over time, providing some great picking
over the coming weeks. The farmstand at the farm is open
Monday through Thursday 10am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday
9am to 4pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

While maintaining an agricultural focus, Seacoast Growers
Association (SGA) farmers' markets also offer fresh seafood
and quality prepared foods such as jams, cookie dough, honey
mead and blended teas. Skilled artisans also present fine
crafts ranging from woven reed baskets, pottery and leather
work, to goat milk soap, herbal medicine, jewelry and Chinese
brush paintings. Visit www.seacoastgrowers.org.

Some of the SGA markets include:
Portsmouth Farmers’ Market – every Saturday from 8:00 am to
1:00 pm in the City Hall parking lot on Junkins Ave.
With a record 32 vendors, the Exeter market takes place in its
traditional location at Swansey Parkway, off Water Street in
downtown Exeter, from 2:15 to 6:00 p.m. every Thursday.
Occasional musical guests also grace the stage there.
The Dover Farmers' Market has settled into its new home in the
parking lot of the Herbal Path at 835 Central Ave.  The Dover
market is held every Wednesday from 2:15 to 6:00 p.m.
The Durham Farmers' Market returns to the parking lot of
Durham Bike on Pettee Brook Lane in the downtown loop.  New
to Durham this year is Nottingham Orchards, selling
blueberries, peaches, a large variety of apples, and fresh-
pressed, unpasteurized apple cider

On Tuesdays, the Hampton market is held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.
m. in the Sacred Heart School parking lot, across from the post
office just north of Route 101.  New vendors this year include
Divine Cuisines (prepared and packaged Indian foods);
George Beland Furniture; Jewell Towne Vineyards (award-
winning wines); New Roots Farm (certified organic vegetables
and herbs and pastured heritage breed pork); Outlaw Farm
(naturally raised beef); and Ramsbotham's Riverview Farm
(specialty cut flowers, plants, decorative gourds, vegetables,
pork, chicken and eggs).

The charming Kingston Farmers' Market is also held every
Tuesday from 2:15 to 5:30 p.m. "on the plains" across from the
fire station on Main Street / Route 111.  The intimacy and
traditional New England setting of this farmers' market make it
a real treat to attend.  Kingston this year also boasts three new
vendors: Catnip Acres Herb Farm (organic greenhouse
vegetable and herb seedlings, plus raspberries, vegetables,
herbs and flowers); Marcotte Farm (vegetables and
raspberries); and Sugarmomma's Maple Farm (maple syrup,
candy, nuts and ice cream, as well as homemade popcorn and
hot sauces).
In the center of the state in Manchester, every Thursday
afternoon from 3 -6:30 pm through October, visit one of the
largest farmers markets in the state. The Downtown
Manchester Farmers Market is a unique and exciting
community event.  Over 25 vendors bring the very best New
Hampshire produce, meat, cut flowers, baked goods, specialty
foods, certified organic products, and other unique items to the
heart of Manchester. Weekly family activities include cooking
demonstrations, music, farm animals and other entertainment.
Located on Concord Street next to Victory Park.  www.

In the Monadnock region, visitors can find Stonewall Farm in
Keene www.stonewallfarm.org. This working farm and
educational center showcases local vendors such as Cheshire
Gardens – a certified organic farm in Winchester, and Orchard
Hill Fruit and Vegetable Farm in East Alstead. Their farm stand
is also open every day until 7 pm. Enjoy ice cream on a
summer day surrounded by pastures, nature trails, gardens, a
brook, and playground and picnic area.

In the Lake Sunapee region, visit Spring Ledge Farm in New
London www.springledgefarm.com, on the east side of the
lake.  Their 25-acre garden of vegetables and pick-your-own-
berries and/or flowers is one of many such farms in the area.
They’re now harvesting fresh Spring Ledge tomatoes, along
with mesclun salad greens, beet greens, arugula, radishes,
micro greens, rhubarb and spinach.  The flower fields also look
great this year, with thousands of blooms and over 225
varieties.  In addition, the farmstand boasts fresh artisan
breads Wed, Fri, and Sat.

In the Great North Woods, the Berlin-Gorham Farmers’ Market
is a “must visit.”  Held in the parking lot of Fred’s Service
Station, 215 Glen Ave., Route 16, Berlin every other Saturday
from July 11 - October 31.  Visitors will also find crafts, baskets,
flowers, wood, handmade art, and much more.

The Local Works Farmers’ Market in Bethlehem is another
North Country marketplace that mixes local produce with live
music and more.  Main Street, Bethlehem, May 23-October 10,
twice-weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Visitors will find
a varied mix of local produce, baked goods, fresh bread and
prepared foods as well as crafts, jewelry, wood working, live
music and much more.  Located at WREN on the corner of Rt.
302 and Park Ave. in the village of Bethlehem.  www.
wrencommunity.org.

A very popular farmers’ market in New Hampshire’s
quintessential New England Town of Jackson is the Jackson
Farmers’ Market next to the Snowflake Inn Field – July through
October, 9am-1pm on Saturdays.   Fresh produce, vegetables,
berries, fruits and plants are available as well as pottery,
jewelry and hand-loomed items.  Also, eggs, baked goods,
artisan breads, maple, cut flowers, goat cheese, meat, honey,
organic goods and more.  There’s also weekly entertainment.

And that’s just a few of the many farm stands and farmers’
markets around the state! Search by city, town or zip code to
discover farmers’ markets, farm stands and harvest your own
locations all over New Hampshire.  There are now 72 markets
throughout the state selling locally grown produce and NH
Made products. According to many, there’s no better place than
New Hampshire to taste summer, fresh from the vine! www.
