Have We Misjudged Chocolate?
By Chelsey Shuman
You probably have always been told that chocolate is not good for you and that you should reserve it for special occasions, if at all.  They
say it can cause your teeth to rot when you are little, acne when you are a teen and upon reaching thirty is can have the lovely effect of
making your hips expand.  But is this really all that can come of a sweet tooth?

Recent studies have shown there may be a benefit to having such cravings as long as you keep it in moderation.  Chocolate actually
contains high levels of potassium, magnesium and vitamins such as B1, B2, D and E.  Okay so what does this mean?

Potassium is essential for our body’s functions and eating foods with high levels of potassium can increase your mental and physical
energy.  It is also shown that having a higher level of potassium can help protect you against things such as hypertension, heart disease,
kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, and stroke. Not too shabby.

Now what could magnesium have to offer us?  To be quite honest it sounds like an ingredient in a science experiment rather than something
beneficial to the human body.  The truth, however, is that magnesium is an essential mineral and is used by the body to help maintain
muscles, nerves, bones and can even help with your metabolism. Vitamins B1, B2 and D all help with the strengthening of bones and the
metabolism of minerals in the body.  Vitamin E provides oxygen to the blood which in turn helps lower the risk of a heart attack.

Although these findings are all very encouraging to those of us sneaking a Hershey’s kiss at lunch time, it cannot be stressed enough that
like anything we consume, moderation is key.  This also does not mean that chocolate can replace our daily dose of other foods providing
the same vitamins.  So the next time you are packing your lunch, slide a little something extra next to those celery sticks and smile knowing
that it tastes good and is good for you. Bon appétit!
