JR Jacobs – Proving That Unexpected Turns Can Be the Greatest Ones
By Chelsey Shuman
In today’s society we are often told that college is not only the best route to success but also a necessity to break into any field. We leave high
school fully prepared for the next four years of college and are often looking at another two plus years of grad school soon to follow. Yes,
receiving an education is truly a gift but can it only be obtained behind a desk?

JR Jacobs begs to differ. Following high school she worked closely under a fashion merchandiser within a Dallas, Texas based company. “It
seemed glamorous — lots of travel, and buying in Manhattan.” Realizing that the fashion business was a world of connections more than anything
else, Jacobs worked diligently at learning the trade and the business in its entirety. With courage and conviction she walked up to the president of
the company upon hearing of a job opening and told him “I could do the job and would work twice as hard as someone who’d come by the job
easily.” JR Jacobs did not disappoint her employer and by her mid-twenties represented the fashion accessories distributor company in nine
states and she was making a ‘pretty decent’ salary.

Although this opportunity proved profitable, she found it to be exhausting as well. The glamour which excited her at the young age of eighteen
started to slip away and she began to look around for something different and perhaps more grounded. Heading to LA, Jacobs got a job at the
Los Angeles Times working in the advertising department. She soon found herself pressured to have a degree amongst her credentials in order
to be taken seriously in such a public line of work. Now in her 30’s the idea of starting college was frightening to say the least, yet something she
saw as a stepping stone for greater opportunities and a way to enhance her life. Many women might say that they don’t have the time to take on
such an endeavor, but Mrs. Jacobs is proof that there is always a way around that. At the time she was pursuing a master’s degree, she was
managing a team of 100 people and working sixty or more hours a week. It comes down to determination and a willingness to ‘allow yourself to
succeed.’ Sounds strange does it not? “Allowing yourself to succeed” - as if you would have it any other way – but in reality many women let their
fears stand as road blocks to going after a passion or goal.

Things will not always go as planned, as JR Jacobs found, but around all those unexpected turns there could be great opportunities and new
connections to help you not only realize your talents and passions but utilize them to fulfill a bigger dream. Through multiple career changes, and
almost twenty years in the newspaper business, Jacobs has found herself working side by side with her husband owning Freetown Yankee
Steakhouse in Raymond, NH off of Route 27. Starting from a space of just 3,500 sq ft and growing to a 5 acre plot, business has been an exciting
growth experience for both her and her husband. With the help of professionals around her in the hospitality business, Jacobs soon fell into a
groove and has not looked back since. “It is amazing to me just how many people will help you get started if you just keep asking questions!”

To younger generations and women about to embark on a career or are currently in one that feels like a dead end, Jacobs says “If there ever
was something I'd like to impress upon a young person, who doesn't THINK there is any purpose to what they are currently doing or learning...it is
this:  “Stay tuned — what you are meant to do will unfold, and I'll bet that ALL your past experiences will be revealed as an important part of your
path!” Through taking advantage of opportunities presented to her, Jacobs managed to combine her utmost passions with her career, a feat
which from the outside looking in may not appear to be much, but is in fact monumental.  Women like JR stand as role models to women
struggling within their current paths and offer hope for a flexible existence, one that can incorporate multiple passions and multiple goals —— A
path which can take on any shift in direction and allow you to constantly progress and push forward.

So as you move forward, remember that the only limits you have are the ones you set for yourself. Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself or tackle a
seemingly impossible obstacle. The more time you sit around wondering if you should go forward, the less time you have to make these goals a
reality. JR Jacobs says it beautifully, “To women who are afraid to take the next step —— Be BOLD —— we are stronger than we realize most
often and there are so many people out there to help.”

Stop by the Freetown Yankee Steakhouse for delicious food and the chance to see a strong, independent woman who has climbed the ladder to
success and shows no signs of stopping. Call 603-895-3418 to find out more about the location and hours of operation.
