Makeup Trends for Fall 2009 by Liz Racioppi
|
Imagine the bright reds, oranges and yellows of the New England trees against a clear blue sky. Or the hues of a vivid sunset in November. The key words for fall
are “natural” and “contrast.” And so it is with this fall season’s make up colors.
This season, as your wardrobe transitions from the bright shiny colors of summer to the more muted autumn tones, your makeup palette should include the
natural blends of grays, browns and sage greens; nude and taupe; berry, plum and purple tones; and highlights of gold and metallic for added texture.
Makeup Colors
This fall, you can either let loose your inner Bohemian, or rediscover your romantic side, with the season’s latest trends. In both cases, you’ll want to focus on one
area of your face while minimizing another. A good rule of thumb is to emphasize your eyes or your lips, but not both at the same time. Subtle makeup in one area
can go a long way when contrasted with an explosion of color in another area.
Bohemian Rhapsody
This look is characterized by a dramatic eye, combined with sheer foundation colors and neutral-toned lips. Go for a smoky look on your lids by choosing eye
shadows in shades of gray or taupe. You can punch it up a bit by using a two tone approach, such as a muted gray beneath the brow with a metallic gray covering
the lid. With the emphasis on a more natural look this season, create an updated cat eye – avoid the turned up tail on your eyeliner and stay with a horizontal line.
Smudged, black or kohl-rimmed eyes complete the look.
Also make note of the continued trend towards more natural brows – severely shaped and overly tweezed brows are out this season, in favor of a heavier, more
natural brow. Heavier brows have the added advantage of giving you a more youthful appearance.
For your foundation, choose a lightweight mineral base that will let your natural skin show through. Moderate the shiny summer look and go for a more matte
finish for the fall. When choosing colors for your lips, try a clear or sheer lipstick – light peach or barely tinted pink would be ideal. Another great color choice is a
rose shade with a hint of gold or a pink with bronze for accent.
Isn’t It Romantic?
This fall’s romantic look reflects a softer and more relaxed style, compared to the extremes of the last year. Soft face and eye shades, combined with vibrant matte
lip colors dominate this season’s refined and glamorous evening makeup creations. The top color trends for eye shadows this fall are nude, taupe, and gray, as
well as shades of purple, berry and plum. You can combine dull shades with their metallic counterparts for a more stylish look.
Good news – long luxurious lashes are back again, but no need to go to excess with this sophisticated look. Try a few temporary eyelash extensions at the outer
corners of each eyelid – the extensions that last for just a day. These extra lashes will make a big difference, and a sheer coat of black or brown mascara is all you’
ll need. And try using a lighter shade of eye liner than the color of your eye shadow to make the eyes pop, but subtly. Excessive black or brown eyeliner doesn’t
necessarily go well with this look.
The lips and the cheeks are where you can have some real fun this season. You can express yourself with more vibrant colors here, to offset the subdued colors
of the eyes and foundation. The key is to use matte colors with just a touch of sparkle. For the lips, you can opt for the warm earthy tones of butterscotch or currant,
flecked with touches of gold gloss for added texture and shine. Or you can go for one of the berry shades – a raspberry lip stain or even a bold red done with
precision will create a beautiful look reminiscent of the glamour of the 1920s. For your cheeks, try one of the great mineral makeup shades in pink or peach with
gold and bronze flecks to contrast your sheer
foundation.
Remember, express yourself this fall by keeping the contrast high – emphasize either the eyes or the lips and keep the rest of your face subtle and neutral. A
natural brow is the popular look, so avoid the temptation to over-tweeze or severely arch your brows. Make use of metallic tones for highlighting and texture for your
eyes, lips or cheeks. Use mineral makeup for a healthy and sheer face. These guidelines will help you to make a big impression with some very simple
techniques.
