Organizing Your Time—The Secret To Moving Beyond Procrastination By Maggie McCauley
|
Time, we never seem to have enough of it! We are always looking for more, especially during the summer. The truth is we are always in charge of our time, but we
allow much of it to be dwindled away when we procrastinate.
We all procrastinate; it’s part of life. However, there’s a secret about procrastination that will change your life. If you want to stop procrastinating, welcome it in.
That's right, embrace it! There is one small catch; welcoming it in doesn’t mean that you can give yourself permission to continue procrastinating!
If you’re discouraged about your procrastination and want to “get rid of it” instead, transcend it – move beyond it – by accepting it. Acceptance means total non-
judgment of your procrastination. It almost seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? When you realize you’re engaging in a “negative” behavior your first thought is to
eliminate it. However, the secret here is once you begin to embrace that which is perceived as negative, you’ll notice that you will be doing it less and less.
How can you transcend procrastination? The first step in moving beyond any problem is recognition, because you now have the power to change and choose how
you want to proceed. Become keenly aware of the signs of procrastination. What are you feeling and thinking? How are you behaving? Acknowledge it; say aloud,
“I’m procrastinating right now.” Then smile because you’ve just been incredibly honest with yourself! This is the first step in moving beyond procrastination.
The next step is to see it differently. What beliefs do you hold about procrastination? Be willing to acknowledge these beliefs without judging, see them from a
different perspective. “I’m procrastinating” could mean that you need help or direction about where and how to start. It could mean that you feel you might fail and
need emotional support. It could mean that you’re too overwhelmed and need to “chunk down” the project. These are perfectly legitimate reasons not to proceed.
Make a choice right in the moment to accept that you are stuck and instead of asking “Why me?” ask “How can I?” Change how you view procrastination and you
have a better chance of getting beyond it. Let procrastinating be OK; find peace within yourself around it.
You can create more ease and forward movement with tasks by being more organized. Before you begin, have a vision of what you want to accomplish and how
you want to be during the project — do you want to be joyful, energized and confident? Next, sit down and make a plan with realistic goals. Plan to work over a
period of time in short intervals rather than trying to finish the project in a chaotic fury in one day. Find the benefit in the task and the results that completing it will
give you; think from the end. Choose those tasks you can procrastinate around and then elicit the support of friends, family and professionals for the ones that
absolutely have to get done.
Time, you really can have more of it. Transcend procrastination by allowing the power of acceptance and non-judgment to be your guides. Be gentle with yourself
as you shift out of old patterns. Trust that you have everything you need to bring about the change that you desire. Believe you can and you will!
