The Applaud Women publication is dedicated to women in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. It's purpose is to inspire, inform, and
applaud local women. The core of the magazine is our inspirational women's articles, most of which feature local women but occasionally we are
able to interview national women who we feel provide a unique inspiration for our readers. Our other articles cover topics of interest such as food
recipes, home, garden, beauty, health, fashion, dating, parenting, seniors, finance, business, hair care, skin care, advice, real estate, insurance,
weddings etc. Each issue has a feature section as well. Many of our articles are written by local business people who provide information
relevant to their business expertise. The Applaud Women website is also a resource center for local women including the most comprehensive
listings of Restaurants, Weddings, Female doctors and Hotels. It also includes a number of informational pages with links, articles and RSS feeds
to both local and national websites of interest to women in NH & n. MA. To read the publication

A native of England, Pam Walden moved to Oregon with husband Aron Hess in 1997 to pursue a dream — to own
and operate their own vineyard. Their dream became a reality in 2000 when they produced their first four barrels of
Pinot Noir, the first harvest from Daedalus Cellars.

Becoming a vintner was not on Pam’s original list of career goals. She was living in England producing television
commercials when she first became interested in wine, shortly after meeting Aron. Eventually his love and
knowledge for wine found its way into her life, and now she can’t imagine turning back. “I have been working full-
time with our cellar since the summer of 2003, after I had our first child. It’s been ten years since we started, and the
company has developed and changed significantly. We have grown from producing 97 cases our first year to
around 3500 cases per year.”

Daedalus Cellars has an interesting name, and great reasoning behind it. Aron’s favorite writer, James Joyce,
created a character named Stephen Daedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and in Ulysses, but the
name Daedalus originally comes from Greek mythology. As explained on their website, “In the myth, Daedalus was
an inventor, most famously as the creator of the Labyrinth at Knossos, a stylized version of which is represented in
our logo. Unfortunately, he was also later imprisoned in his Labyrinth, along with his son Icarus. They both managed
to escape, but only Daedalus survived as Icarus succumbed to hubris. We chose the name, the myth if you will,
because we see in it what we think Joyce saw:  the freedom that can be gained in creative pursuit, and the cost at
which it can come, especially if you don’t remain humble.”

Many people do not initially think of Oregon as a state that produces fine wine, but according to Pam, Oregon wine
is better than California’s wine. “The standards in Oregon are higher. For us to produce Pinot Noir here, the barrel
has to contain 100% Pinot Noir, as opposed to a minimum 25% elsewhere.”

As a mom with small children, Pam finds that working at Daedalus has been challenging. “It’s difficult to have small
children and to grow a business as well. I think it’s a generational thing – my generation is transitional. My mother
stayed at home and worked part time, but like most women my age, I have a full time job. It helps to be self-
employed, since I can be in control of my own schedule.”

Pam works in all aspects of the company, from working directly in the vineyard to sales. “I very much enjoy having
the flexibility of my job. I love being out in the vineyard, it’s a great antidote to being on the road and selling wine.
There’s a balance I strike between being sociable and being immersed in the vineyard.” Having Pam’s ability to be
flexible is extremely important, especially considering that aside from herself and Aron, Daedalus only has one other
full time employee.

Pam also credits a lot of the company’s success to Aron. “Being in control of your own destiny is a great way to go,
and having a great partner like Aron only makes it better. He definitely alleviates some of the stress. Being self-
employed is also a great way for a mother, such as me, to have a career.”

“I think that everyone should learn more about wine,” says Pam. “Wine enhances everything, and knowing the
reasons behind your choices only makes it better.” Living on the vineyard, Pam has undoubtedly acquired much of
this knowledge, and her and Aron’s passion is reflected in every bottle of Daedalus Cellars wine.
