It is a rainy morning in England. A hot cup of tea is placed on a table as it reflects the light of a fire from across the room. The crackling logs are accompanied
only by the sound of instrumental music playing overhead. With this setting, Sarah Ban Breathnach now sits back and works in serenity.
One would think that since Sarah is a New York Times Bestseller, has eleven published books and has had Oprah Winfrey praise her work as “life-changing,”
she must have always dreamed of being a great author—but that is not so.
Born in New York and raised in Massachusetts, Sarah’s first passion was acting. When she moved to London and experienced rejection while pursuing her
career, she discovered that she could be successful as a writer. “I did not put my own self-worth on the line in my writing,” said Sarah, “and in many ways that
was freeing.”
After twenty years of being a journalist—having a syndicated column in The Washington Post—and getting two books on Victorian family life published, Sarah
said that she first found her voice on the page while writing Simple Abundance.
Over a two-year period, Simple Abundance was turned down thirty times but Sarah experienced a growing transformation and realized that she was born to
write this book. “Because of the way I came into writing,” Sarah said, “I was able to recognize that it was not me—it was being turned down because the timing
wasn’t right.”
Eventually, she had her happy ending. Warner Books gave her a contract and in a total of four years, her masterpiece was complete.
“When she wants something, there’s no stopping her!” said Maureen O’Crean, Sarah’s sister. “What impresses me the most about Sarah is that she’s
completely focused on the outcome of her life and has always been so clear about what she wants to accomplish.”
For instance, when Sarah wanted to find a blue willow tea set for her daughter, she found one the same day at an antique shop without a problem. “Sarah
believes it doesn’t take anything more to manifest a blue willow tea set than it does a million dollars,” said Maureen.
Sarah said that what changed her into a positive thinker was living the gratitude that she wrote about in Simple Abundance. “It’s the most powerful
transformative energy because it’s love, generosity and appreciation,” she said.
In reaction to her work, Sarah has received over 40,000 letters that consist of heartfelt writings—some of which are sixteen pages long—that share the life
struggles of women and how Sarah’s work was there for them.
“Sarah is very soft-hearted,” said Maureen. “She reads every single letter she gets and is always touched by them.”
Sarah said it is an honor for her to be part of her readers’ journey but she wants them to applaud themselves for they are the ones that did the work with Spirit
and God. “It’s very important in our spiritual and artistic growth to give ourselves credit,” Sarah said. “We don’t give ourselves enough of it.”
While currently working on a book about how to find financial serenity in today’s trying times, she is also writing exclusively for her website,
www.SimpleAbundance.com. “I’m just like my readers—all the things they care about, I care about,” said Sarah. “I really want the website to be a place where
women meet other women who love Simple Abundance and who love the same things we love—the home comforts, the vintage bliss, the earthly delights and
the simple things around us.”
Sarah also has 50 certified leaders across the country who conduct her workshops entitled “Simple Abundance Close to Home.” One of those leaders is
Trudie Young who holds her two-hour workshops at AntiquiTeas Tearoom in Londonderry, NH and has her own website, www.LivingSixGraces.com.
Trudie said the workshops are dedicated to Sarah’s six principles—gratitude, simplicity, order, harmony, beauty and joy—in which women read, reflect and
share stories as they connect with themselves and their friends.
“I would love for women to learn from Sarah’s words and share with each other to allow themselves to bask in their own beauty,” said Trudie.
Sarah wrote in Simple Abundance that it is not good for women to be silent. “We need to get real life off our chests…so that we can get on with it,” wrote Sarah.
“We can’t do that when we’re stuck, and women do get stuck, in a kind of self-destructive holding pattern, when they’re silent.”
Sarah wrote that with every breath, women pray. She makes women aware that they are praying to Someone, aware that they are important, and aware of the
positive elements they have been given in their life to clearly hear the beautiful music in their hearts.
