The Applaud Women publication is dedicated to women in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. It's purpose is to inspire, inform, and
applaud local women. The core of the magazine is our inspirational women's articles, most of which feature local women but occasionally we are
able to interview national women who we feel provide a unique inspiration for our readers. Our other articles cover topics of interest such as food
recipes, home, garden, beauty, health, fashion, dating, parenting, seniors, finance, business, hair care, skin care, advice, real estate, insurance,
weddings etc. Each issue has a feature section as well. Many of our articles are written by local business people who provide information
relevant to their business expertise. The Applaud Women website is also a resource center for local women including the most comprehensive
listings of Restaurants, Weddings, Female doctors and Hotels. It also includes a number of informational pages with links, articles and RSS feeds
to both local and national websites of interest to women in NH & n. MA.

Sarah Quiroga – Determined and Dauntless By Chelsey Shuman
|
The power of reinvention: a breathtaking proposition to take on but one that can often land you in the midst of success and fulfillment. Sarah
Quiroga did just that when she went into business with her husband, owner of The Chair Gallery in Manchester, NH.
While in high school, she decided that Radio was her biggest passion and by sixteen had secured an internship with a local radio show called the
Morning Buzz. This only wet her appetite for potential opportunities in the business, and as she began her university classes, she took on the role
of news director at the college radio station WUNH, in Durham, NH. “The work experience I gained back then was more valuable than anything I
learned in my college classes.”
This passion for the broadcasting field proved to be exponential and very fulfilling as time went on. The only shift was a change in direction within
the industry, from radio personnel to news reporting. “My passions and life were totally aligned...in fact, I didn't really have a life besides
broadcasting. I worked seven days a week for a few years, taking any job I could get. I went to city council meetings at night and woke up at 4
o'clock in the morning to read news on the weekends.” Through her experiences in the field, Sarah found the strength and conviction to
overcome anything that she faced. The hard work needed to survive in such an industry is evident, and although trying at times, makes the
individual more prepared for whatever path they are faced with.
For Sarah Quiroga, this path turned out to be partnering in a furniture business with her husband. After asking her to become a partner, together
they built up a successful business which has provided ample security both physically and mentally for each of them. Although this decision to
change career paths later in life was tough and coming with no guarantees, it allowed Sarah to build a life that was hers. “In the end I weighed all
the benefits of being my own boss and someday wanting a family and decided to leave broadcasting. This extreme change sent shockwaves
through my family and maybe even a little through the very industry I had worked so hard to be part of. My career was on a fast-track.”
Women often find themselves having to make a decision between their passion for their current career and their passion for a family when
deciding their future career path. Although difficult, it is important to remember that nothing is ever set in stone. Sarah may have left a thriving
broadcasting career behind, but what she walked into was a successful and fulfilling life with her husband. This has allowed her to develop a real
sense of community, and have a deeper connection with her audience, even though the audience is of a different kind.
To women who are just venturing out, Sarah says “You have to have confidence in your abilities and think big, and ignore people who tell you
what you can't do. My husband is the same way, if not more so. He and I have taken some pretty big, but calculated, risks as business owners.
They have all paid off because we work hard to support those decisions.” If anything, take away from this story that faith in yourself is a
guaranteed success ingredient. Although things never had a set direction for Sarah, she knew what she was capable of and harnessed her skills
to achieve even greater opportunities. Today she has come to expect the unexpected and instead of working around it, works with it. Owning a
business has taught her to make things happen for herself rather than depending on others. Through this process she has also learned that
things will never go your way 100% of the time, but it is in those difficult moments that you need to take a step back and decide if there is a better
way to go about something and then go after it. “...When you've followed the directions given to you and still haven't achieved the desired
results...maybe it's time to follow your own directions.”
You control your own destiny so make the best of what you have and don’t let fear immobilize your potential and/or creativity.
