Sherri Sarrouf - St. Jude's Fundraiser By Cheri Valentine
|
Sherri Sarrouf is a powerhouse of energy, determination and passion. Once she decides to do something, consider it done. Her
grandmother, with whom she was very close, had a stroke and never spoke or walked again. Upon learning that this could have been
prevented, Sherri decided to become a health educator to motivate others to take care of their bodies.
For over twenty years, Sherri has been encouraging people to live healthy lives through exercise. She began teaching group fitness classes
in corporations and at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the 1980’s. For the past ten years, Sherri has managed group fitness for Gold’s Gym in
Manchester, Merrimack, and Nashua NH, as well as Tewksbury, MA, where she implements all schedules, trains, and teaches several
classes herself. She was also a board member of the American Heart Association for several years.
Marriage and complications during her second pregnancy switched the focus of Sheri’s energy and volunteer vision to helping St. Jude’s
Research Hospital where no child is ever refused treatment for inability to pay. Sherri was motivated by the fact that 85 cents from every
dollar of donations is used for research and the sick children at the hospital. She began by organizing a fashion fitness show fundraiser that
is now hosted as two fund raising galas every year and has raised over 1 million dollars for the hospital.
Fueled by her passion and belief that “those that are strong in mind and body and in good health should give back to the sick and less
fortunate,” Sherri formed a Fitness For the Cure team, teaching 10 adults and 4 kids dance and fitness routines to perform at fundraisers,
schools, and St. Jude’s Research Hospital. This team, named the St. Jude Performance Team by the hospital foundation, is now comprised
of 75 children and 20 adults who train for hours every week with Sherri. In addition to performing, they spend four days every two years in
Memphis, Tennessee, at the hospital with the sick children and their families.
Sherri juggles the responsibilities of raising a family, working and managing her dedicated efforts for St. Jude’s with energy, enthusiasm, and
passion. Knowing that she is contributing to all hospitals, pediatric centers, and sick children, not just to St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis,
keeps her motivated. “The sickest of the sick are sent to St. Jude’s. When kids cannot be helped anywhere else, they go to St. Jude’s. They
set the protocol for all pediatric cancer treatment,” said Sherri. It is meaningful to Sherri that every child at the hospital has his or her own
doctor and research team treating their individual needs.
Many anxious mothers of sick children are grateful for the hope they are given by people who raise the money for the hospital and have
personally thanked Sherri for her committed efforts. Matt Noyes was the first cancer survivor with whom Sherri became friends, and he was a
member of the performance team. Although he eventually lost his battle to cancer in his young twenties, his memory lives on through the
legacy of his determined request that Sherri never stop the work she is doing for St. Jude’s.
Sherri understands the value in self-care first in order to give to others. “I take time in summer and recharge, spend time with family, relax,
regroup, and get excited to start again.” Her husband, who introduced her to St. Jude’s and sits on the governing board for fundraising at
the hospital, is a great supporter of Sherri’s philanthropy work. He also accompanies her on the biannual trips to Memphis, along with their
two children. Sherri lives what she believes, and is truly an inspiring woman.
