Okay, so the warm weather has started and many of us are now thinking of how we’re going to look in last year’s swimsuits. So Applaud turned to our resident weight loss expert to see what advice she can offer to help.
Let’s talk about the importance of calories. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine confirms that calories are key to weight loss. “But I don’t eat many calories,” you might think to yourself.
But calories are sneaky little devils. They can crop up in the most unexpected places. And trying to balance them can be a bit confusing.

Setting personal boundaries is important in relationships. It allows you to be centered, indicates to others how to treat you, and helps you find the right person.
If we do not set personal boundaries, we can become resentful, stressed, and quickly disappointed in attempts at dating. We jeopardize our chances at forming new, healthy relationships.
To set personal boundaries you must first be clear on your values and your needs. Know what you are willing to do and not do. Know how to say “no” when something is not right for you, and “yes” when it is. You must understand your needs so that you can be mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. Do you allow yourself time for your own care and needs? If you are not doing this now, chances are you will not do this in dating or in a relationship, and it will be difficult for another person to tap into your healthy personal energy that is the foundation for a good relationship. It’s been a long winter and pretty soon it will be time to put away the heavy wool sweaters and start thinking spring clothes. If you’re worried that your spring wardrobe isn’t up to par, take a peek at what’s “in” this season & have fun incorporating some updated pieces into your collection.
Neutrals:
Soft neutral colors are everywhere this season – shades of pale gray, beige, peach, and taupe are this spring’s staple colors. Unfortunately, not everyone can wear these colors since they tend to wash some women out. If you have this issue, mix soft neutrals with bright colors such as shades of turquoise, coral, and blue. Some of my favorite color combinations are light peach with coral, light gray with turquoise, and layered shades of sand, beige and khaki. I also love neutrals with metallics!

Springtime Savings: Looking Fabulous on a Budget

It’s easy to go overboard spending-wise when springtime rolls around. All of our gray and black winter frocks seem so boring in contrast to the gorgeous colors that are on full display in every store. But you don’t have to break the bank to look fantastic this season. With my shopping budget of basically $0 (fine, maybe a tiny bit more than that), it’s tough to find ways to update my style. Sticking to accessories is the easiest way for me. You can update what you already have (ie: a little black dress, anything denim, a plain white t-shirt, etc.) with a few great accessories and make a huge difference in the way you look. Here are a few springtime delights that won’t leave you penniless.
Scarves
Buying a few scarves is a great way to step-up your wardrobe in the cheapest way possible. Not only does it warm you up during this transitional period, it also can turn your normal, everyday “blah” look into a totally different outfit. There are countless options out there. I like to go to flea markets and try to find deals, but if you’re wary of that, there are some great finds all over the place! This scarf from Old Navy is on sale for about $11. Mary Richardson has been a pathfinder for women in the news world. Currently the co-host of Chronicle on ABC’s WCVB-TV Channel 5 in Boston, her career followed a coast-to-coast path, which shows, as she says, “that you can have your dreams, and can dare to aspire to bigger things.”
A native Californian, Mary began a career in teaching after completing a degree in English. Upon assigning her students a communications project she began to appreciate her own interest in communications and started attending graduate school at night. The decision to quit teaching to attend school full time and undertake the required internship paved the way to Mary’s future in broadcasting.

Hillary Chabot, State House Reporter, Boston Herald~“The Feds came in and arrested him,” she said. “It was a huge story. And I broke it in a weekly paper!”
Hollywood often portrays journalists as nosy individuals who show up where they don’t belong. But sometimes, journalists wind up in the right place at the right time. This was the case with Hillary Chabot, a journalist for the Boston Herald. Prior to her involvement with the Boston newspaper, she worked as a local reporter for the Cambridge Chronicle. It was the Spring of 2002, just months after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Hillary was working on a story about a personal trainer in Cambridge who was accused of stealing identities. As a result of careful investigative work, Hillary discovered he was connected with Al-Qaeda. “The Feds came in and arrested him,” she said. “It was a huge story. And I broke it in a weekly paper!”
Her career began in college. She attended UMass Boston, double majoring in English and in History. “I interned everywhere,” Hillary said. She held four internships at four prestigious newspapers over the course of her college career including the Boston Globe, Atlantic Monthly and the Improper Bostonian. “I liked the excitement of being a reporter,” Hillary says. Jennifer Peter, News Editor, Boston Globe~“I feel blessed,” she says. “I landed on the right path without a lot of trial and error.”
Journalism is no joke. A combination of long hours, late nights, and tight deadlines may make the job seem a bit unattractive to some, but not for Jennifer Peter. Once a reporter, she has since moved up to become one of the Boston Globe’s top editors. She has covered stories ranging from political upheaval to groundbreaking legislative laws, but has now moved into a position where she has more input as to what is covered on a daily basis.
As a college student, Jennifer considered herself “aimless,” never taking much time to think about her career. But she always had a gift for writing. Gretchen Putnam, Managing Editor, Eagle Tribune~When I found out that I had won (the Pulitzer Prize), it was absolutely unbelievable. I knew that the coverage was special, it was an unbelievably heart-wrenching story, and my team worked for 48 hours straight…,,” exclaims Gretchen.
She’s the managing editor of a local newspaper, she co-hosts her own weekly radio show, and she has won the Pulitzer prize – is there anything that Gretchen Putnam can’t do?
Gretchen Putnam of Atkinson, NH, has worked with the Eagle Tribune, based in Haverhill, MA, since 1995, when she joined as a reporter. “I always knew that I wanted to be a reporter. One of my favorite books growing up was Harriet the Spy; she had her little composition notebook, she wrote down everything, and I wanted to be just like her. She was an inquisitive kid that got involved!” says Gretchen. Susan Laughlin, Creative Director-New Hampshire Magazine~“I love seeing all our hard work in a nice little package. As much as we worry, it’s always pulled together and looks pretty good, if I do say so myself,” says Susan.
“The best advice that I can give anyone is to not say no to anything, and to follow the way the river turns. If you can get an internship, even if you’re paid nothing, the experience is invaluable. Keep as active as you can, and be persistent,” says Susan Laughlin, Creative Director and Food Editor of New Hampshire Magazine.
As a child, Susan always found herself drawing little pictures of families, floor plans and houses. She always excelled in art classes, and decided to pursue a fine arts and commercial arts background. “I always liked to write, too,” says Susan, “and at a former position, I was always writing little campaigns and doing marketing-style writing. Sharon Ciechon, VP & HR Director, Union Leaderr~“I like helping people, especially when it involves straightening out issues that they might have that they can’t take to their direct boss. I have to remain confidential and passionate, as well as have an open mind. I need to know the laws, and I rely on other HR organizations or labor attorneys when I need someone else to turn to for accurate information….” says Sharon.
Sharon Ciechon works in a different aspect of the media than our other inspirational women: she is the Vice President in charge of Human Resources for the Union Leader.
She began working with the Union Leader 30 years ago as a clerk in the advertising department. Sharon has worked in various other departments, moving up to layout, then classified advertising sales, then in a management position in the advertising sales department, and finally working in HR. “I love everyone at the Union Leader, it’s a great place to work. Applaud Women Spring Issue-Inspirational Women in Media-Heidi Copeland, Business NH Magazine
Our Spring issue focuses on Inspirational Women in Media including 24 interviews with the top women in media in newspaper, radio and TV in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts (Boston, MA). Each woman’s story in unique and carries with it an empowering message to our readership. The next series of posts will include excerpts from each article with a link to the full issue.
Heidi Copeland, Associate Publisher, Business NH Magazine. Heidi Copeland, of Amherst, NH, is the Associate Publisher of Business New Hampshire magazine.
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Heidi began her career as a police reporter in California, and eventually made the move back to New Hampshire. After relocating, she did everything for her own news agency which sold articles to the Union Leader, as well as writing for an energy trade publication in Boston, and for a robotics magazine.
Heidi landed her position at Business New Hampshire while working in Boston. “At the time, I was a publisher of a magazine that was just south of Boston, and one of the women that I knew who worked for Business New Hampshire suggested that I meet with publisher, Sean Mahoney.
