WODS’ Karen Blake was recently voted Boston’s Most Popular DJ, as well as Major Market Air Personality of the Year, and for good reason. This inspirational woman brings experience, personality, passion, and a load of talent with her to the airwaves every day.
Karen always knew that she wanted to be involved in some kind of show business, but she wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do until high school. “I was doing a project, and after I presented it, my teacher came up to me and said, ‘You’re a really good public speaker, you should think about being a DJ,’ and I said to myself, that’s it! I knew that I could incorporate my personality into that job, and that’s very important to me.”
Born and raised in a suburb of Boston, Karen loves the fact that she has been able to work for 30 years in her native area. “One of my greatest challenges and successes is that I’ve consistently evolved and reinvented who I am as a professional without changing the essence of who I am as a person. I try to go along with the times, and try not to get stuck too much in the past. It’s all about being relevant to today and making a connection from where you’ve been to where you are now. Pamela Correia, creator and producer of the “New Hampshire Personalities” television show, didn’t always think that she would end up working in the media. “I still can’t believe that it’s taken off so quickly; we even have a waiting list for people to be featured on the program. It’s grown by leaps and bounds – I’m just so happy that we’re still on the air ten years later!”
As co-vice president for the Bedford Newcomers Club, Pamela went to a local access TV station in 1999 to see if she could create an infomercial for her club. Bill Jennings, the station director, noticed that Pamela seemed to love the camera and gave her the idea to come up with her own show.
“I thought it would be really fun to interview locals who exemplify excellence in what they do, like authors or chefs, basically the ‘celebrities of New Hampshire’,” says Pamela. “One really interesting person we featured was Master Richard An, a Tae Kwon Do champion. Rita Cary, The River 92.5’s morning DJ, is a native of Toronto, Canada, but that hasn’t prevented her from making her mark on the media in the United States.
Rita graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in journalism and found her first job as a wire editor at the Canadian Press. “I always wanted to be a print journalist,” says Rita, “and I’ve always been very interested in politics.” When she moved to San Antonio, Texas, Rita
became a political reporter for the San Antonio Express news covering local politics. After moving to New Hampshire with her husband, she worked for the Portsmouth Herald.
So how did Rita end up in radio with a background in print journalism? “It was mostly just a huge coincidence, really. A friend of a friend needed someone to fill in at the station, and I sort of fell into it. I’ve always loved music and I’d been a River listener for a while. It worked out perfectly,” Rita explains. Mix 104.1’s Kennedy Elsey knows almost everything about pop culture, and she’s got the trivia record to prove it, having lost to her listeners only fourteen times in the station’s daily trivia challenge.
Born in Virginia, Kennedy spent most her life in the suburbs of Chicago. A self-described former ‘wage slave for the man,’ Kennedy worked at a temp agency in North Carolina when she was first discovered by her now co-host, Karson. “I have a theatre background, and I was doing a show when I first met Karson. He wanted to do it, but he can’t sing or act, so he ended up working on the sound. He saw me on stage and asked if I’ve ever thought of doing radio, and I said, ‘Um, I’ve got a real job, thank you,’ and thus began our friendship and a two to three month aggressive campaign for me to get on the radio with him at 2 AM,” Kennedy says. WOKQ’s Karen Kiley has always been an entertainer. “When I was little, I actually wanted to be a backup singer! I used to do all kinds of goofy things. My brother and I used to read names from the phone book as if we were announcers. I think of myself as fairly creative, and it’s funny how something so silly kind of found its way into my career.”
Karen was originally a traffic reporter, but now is a co-host on WOKQ’s morning show. Like many people who work in this field, radio was a second try at a career. “Radio was always something that I had wanted to do, but I put it off until my late twenties. I decided to take the path that is often traveled by going into the regular business world, but I knew deep down what I really wanted to do, and I wasn’t getting any younger. It’s absolutely impossible to listen to Frank-FM’s Sarah Sullivan and not laugh at her unique insights and share in her enthusiasm. Sarah is not only an on-air DJ, but is the station’s program director.
Having lived and breathed music since a young age, it was only natural that Sarah would end up in a career that centered on it. “My parents have tons pictures of me when I was younger wearing huge headphones,” she says. “I took every vinyl record that I could get my hands on, especially ones that belonged to my six older siblings. They introduced me to the sixties and seventies, but the eighties is really my era. Kiss 108’s Kendra Petrone, producer of the Matty in the Morning show, shares her words of wisdom: “Life is so short, it’s important to enjoy what you’re doing. Why would you work until you’re 65 doing something you hate?”
Kendra, originally from Methuen, MA, always knew that she wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry, but it wasn’t until college that she found herself first stepping onto the path to a great career. “I knew that I wanted to be an entertainment reporter, either on TV or the radio. In my fifth year at UMass Amherst, I had a couple extra credits that I needed to fill, and I wanted to do an internship instead of taking a regular class. I got an internship at a rock radio station in Springfield, and I did a whole semester’s worth of credits in their promotions department. Laura Boyce, a morning DJ on Rock 101’s Greg and the Morning Buzz, didn’t always want to be on a morning radio show, but now knows she’s found the right place. “I’m so happy where I am, I can’t see myself ever leaving the family! Greg is like another Dad, and Roadkill and Andy are my brothers. It also helps that I’m not a total girly-girl!”
Originally an aspiring sports broadcaster, Laura took some time off from school and became a waitress at Hooters in Manchester, NH. Luckily for her, a sales representative from Rock 101 came in looking for advertising opportunities, and one of the managers, knowing that Laura wanted to make her way into broadcasting, connected the two. The sales rep asked if she would be willing to do commercials, and after proving herself, he wanted to see her continue to grow her career. Soon enough, Laura found herself putting together a show on 610 AM one night per week that would focus on Boston sports teams and this is where it all took off.
